Water helps push waste products and contaminants out of the system through urination. According to Green Water Technologies, it also carries oxygen throughout the body and since our cells cannot function without oxygen, without water, we would die. Water is a vital part of the digestion process; our digestive juices are primarily made of H2O.
As humans, we get most of our water through the beverages we consume. But, many foods also help hydrate the body. Fruits, for example, can be made up of more than 90% water. Watermelons, celery, tomatoes, peaches, pears, and plums are excellent sources of water that serve a dual purpose of providing the body with vitamins, minerals, and fiber, explains the team at Green Water Technologies.
How much is enough?
20 ounces? 30 ounces? 100 ounces? How much water should children drink each day? There’s actually no set number of ounces to shoot for in a single 24 hour timeframe. Green Water Technologies reports that children should drink water or milk with each meal and periodically throughout the day. When the weather is warm, children should increase water consumption so they don’t feel thirsty. This is also true when participating in sports or playing outdoors.
Dehydration is simply the state of not having enough water in the body, explains Green Water Technologies. While mild dehydration won’t cause any long-term ill effects, not drinking enough water for days, weeks, or even months can. Chronic dehydration can cause dry skin and hair and, in its most extreme form, even death.
